Jeju Tourist Attractions Special Experiences: Gwaneumsa Temple Stay

A trip to Jeju Island is impossible in one day. Of course, it would be different if you've been there often. If it's your first trip to Jeju, there are many places to visit other than temples.

There will be insufficient time to get to the temple hidden in the corner. However, if you plan a longer schedule, I'm sure that a trip to the temple in Jeju will provide a special experience.

Today, we included not only Yakcheonsa Temple, which is visited by many tourists, but also the history, attractions, and directions of Gwaneumsa Temple, which shows amazing scenery from the entrance.

Characteristics of Jeju Temple

The Jeju Buddhist temple itself is a travel path, looking out at the pavilions, thanks to its forest path, wind path, and stone-textured environment at the foot of Hallasan Mountain. The air in the forest is distinctly different from that in the city center.

It can be said that a course as small as a Jeju temple is rare because it adds time to walk slowly and catch your breath between Jeju tourist attractions.

Morning or sunset is the quietest and the atmosphere is good, and if there is a place to sit anywhere in the temple, I recommend you to enjoy the quiet flowing scenery.

Jeju Gwaneum Temple

Gwaneumsa Temple in Jeju is a temple located on the middle of Hallasan Mountain. The access road to the redwood tree is particularly beautiful, and there are many attractions such as Cheonwangmun Gate, Daeungjeon Hall, and Gwaneumgul Cave in the compound, making it difficult to stay for a short time.

Gwaneumsa Temple, a temple that is memorable even after a short visit, is also known to play a central role in Jeju Buddhism.

History of Jeju Gwaneumsa Temple

If you search for Jeju Gwaneumsa Temple, you will find more than three temples. Because this place is near Hallasan Mountain, it is easy to search for Hallasan Gwaneumsa Temple.

Address: 660 Sanrokbuk-ro, Jeju-si

The exact foundation date of the founder and the founder of Hallasan Gwaneumsa Temple is not clearly stated, but there is only a record that it existed during the Joseon Dynasty.

During the Joseon Dynasty, policies to curb Buddhism were implemented because Neo-Confucianism (Confucianism) was the national ideology. Local governments began to control Buddhism as a heresy or superstition.

Against this backdrop, Lee, who was appointed as a pastor of Jeju in 1702 (the 28th year of King Sukjong's reign), wrote a policy to abolish the shrine and temple to correct the customs of Jeju people in a Confucian manner. And Lee is said to have burned down the shrine and temple.

At this time, temples in Jeju were greatly damaged and Gwaneumsa Temple collapsed together, leaving it as a ruin for a while.

Reconstruction of Gwaneum Temple

Gwaneumsa Temple began to be known again in the early 1900s. When monk Haewoldang, a nun, rebuilt it at the foot of Hallasan Mountain, he made a fresh start.

Some sources refer to it as the spring of 1909, while others refer to it as around 1908. In any case, Buddha statues and Buddhist paintings were brought from Yonghwasa Temple in Jeju in 1910, and Gwaneumsa Temple began to have a proper form and belief system that could be practiced with worship.

a fire and a 4.3-magnitude storm

However, the hard-won restoration of the temple goes through another period of pain. A large fire breaks out when major pavilions such as Daeungjeon Hall are burned down in 1939.

Subsequently, due to the Jeju 4.3 incident in 1948, Gwaneumsa Temple became a confrontation place between citizens and soldiers due to its geographical characteristics at the foot of Hallasan Mountain, and the restored royal palaces were completely burned down.

the present state of things

In the late 1960s, Gwaneumsa Temple began to be rebuilt once again with the mind of 'from the beginning'. It has taken on the form of today by taking its place one by one from the core pavilions such as Daeungjeon Hall.

So, the experience of walking through the grounds of Gwaneumsa Temple gives you a time to feel the history of Jeju, and it makes me think that the time that has continued beyond being beautiful is great.

The sights of Gwaneum Temple

Lotus lantern and cedar road leading from the entrance

Gwaneumsa Temple is famous for its way through Iljumun to Cheonwangmun Gate.

The straight cedar trees on both sides, stone Buddhas on the basalt stone walls, and lotus lanterns that lead to it make me exclaim without realizing it.

The Great Buddha and the Great Buddha of Maitreya

Small Buddha statues made of basalt form a spectacular view around the Bireukdae Buddha, which is most visible when entering the precinct.

This Maitreya Buddha is meant to heal the wounds of Jeju 4.3, promote Jeju Buddhism, and pray for the prosperity and comfort of Jeju residents.

A Seol-mun table and a grandmother's stone

The grandmother who made Jeju Island was Seolmundae Halmang. According to legend, Seolmundae Halmang was a creation god who created the main features of Jeju, such as mountains and islands, and had a huge size.

Put your hands together in front of the wish stone of Seolmundae Halmang at Gwaneumsa Temple, greet her lightly, pet her with both hands to convey the warmth of her hands, lift the stone slightly, feel the weight, and put it in place and say my name, date of birth, and where you live and make a wish.

And when you lift the stone again, your wish may come true if it feels heavier or you can't hear it well.

Temple Stay at Gwaneum Temple

Gwaneumsa Temple Stay is divided into one-day, experiential, and rest types depending on the program composition.

The one-day programs stand out for programs that are designed to help you organize your mind without having a tight schedule. For example, there are free experiences for the New Year (Dec. 31), which are tailored to the end of the year and the beginning of the year season, a one-day table for young people, and a one-day program for groups of more than 10 people.

Temple stay usually includes meditation, meditation, chats with monks, paeu offerings, worship services, 108 bae, and making experiences. For reservations, refer to the official Temple Stay site of Pompeii.

Finish

If you're looking for a comma-like place on your trip to Jeju, please stop by Gwaneumsa Temple. You'll be able to fill a page of meaningful memories if you take pictures of the temple's attractions while remembering the stories you keep in the beautiful scenery.
